Hemangiomas are growths which form on the skin. They are non-cancerous and develop into what look like birthmarks. A hemangioma can form in both the lower layers of skin and the top layer of skin (epidermis). Unless the hemangioma is large, there is rarely any need for treatment. However, in some cases, even small hemangioma require treatment if they are growing in an area of the skin which causes sensitivity to become an issue. Hemangioma Causes & Symptoms
Hemangiomas are caused by blood vessels forming together into a lump. Although there is no consensus on the cause of hemangiomas, experts agree that they are likely caused by proteins which are present during gestation. These proteins have been observed in the placenta of pregnant women and there appears to be a causal link with babies who have been confirmed as having developed hemangiomas. The symptoms of hemangiomas are red abrasions which may grow and turn a deeper, strawberry red. Strawberry hemangiomas are most common on the neck and face, which is also the most likely reason that people will seek treatment.
Hemangioma Treatment
Both medical and surgical treatment options are available for hemangioma. Smaller hemangioma will likely go away on their own and won’t require any form of treatment. However, if the hemangiomas are in sensitive areas or sores form, you can seek treatment to have them removed. Corticosteroid medication and medical gels are the main two options which don’t require surgery. Laser treatment is also effective if there are no additional complications involved.
