Hair Loss (Alopecia Areata)

  • What is it?
    • Hair loss in which the body attempts to reject the hair by forming inflammation with lymphocytes around the hair follicle
    • May develop one or two patches, or may be quite extensive
    • Usually regrows, but may occur in a different area later
  • What causes it?
    • Autoimmune disease modified by genetic factors
    • Aggravated by emotional factors
  • Treatments
    • Intralesional injection of a cortisteroid
    • Topical steroids
    • Anthralin
    • Topical Minoxidil
    • Allergic contact dermatitis (DNCB – dinitrochlorobenzine)
    • Systemic steroids
